Change in Season Gives Mom Reason for a Regular Health Check

(ARA) – As the weather changes and kids are in school, family schedules go from very busy to crazy. Mothers’ schedules kick into high gear, and it’s easy for women to overlook a key element of their family’s overall well-being – Mom’s health.
“Mothers often find it difficult to take time away from their children and family to focus on their own health needs,” says Dr. Isabel Blumberg, an OB/GYN and women’s health expert. “However, it is extremely important that women keep themselves healthy so that they can focus on their personal lives, families and careers.”
It’s understandable that mothers might overlook their own health needs when they feel pressed for time by family and work demands, Blumberg says. But some simple lifestyle changes – ones that can easily fit into a woman’s busy schedule – can help mothers take better care of themselves, and, in turn, better care of their families, she says.
First, women should consider following the same basics of good health for themselves that they practice for their children. Eating a well-balanced diet, getting an appropriate amount of sleep each night, having regular checkups with the doctor and making time for exercise may help to maintain good health. Mothers may also try managing stress by avoiding unhealthy activities, like smoking or aggressive driving.
Women in particular should also pay attention to their digestive health and regularity, as constipation is twice as common among women as men, affecting women of all ages. In fact, constipation affects 65 million people each year, about twice as many as those who suffer from seasonal allergies.
Women are leading busier lives than ever which may mean they are walking less and dieting more often. This can deplete their bodies of the fiber and fluids that may help keep them regular.
“While an overall healthful lifestyle can help promote regularity, occasional constipation may still occur,” Blumberg says. When this happens, she recommends MiraLAX®, the number one doctor-recommended laxative, which is now only available over-the-counter.
If moms take time out to help keep themselves healthy, they can better focus on their lives and the health of their family members.
